Monday, March 28, 2022- In early February 2022, the Cargo Owners' Association, newly created by France Supply Chain and the Association des Utilisateurs de transport de Fret (AUTF), launched tenders for wind-powered cargo transport solutions, starting 2024. This approach aims to accelerate the decarbonization of maritime transport on a global scale, for a more sustainable future.
Faced with permanent environmental challenges, companies search for solutions that enable logistics with a lower impact on the environment. However, the decarbonization of maritime transport remains a complex subject.
While innovative solutions, such as biofuels, are currently applicable, they cannot be the only answer to the global need to reduce our reliance on traditional forms of energy. Maritime transport is vital for the global economy, as an essential facilitator to international trade.
France Supply Chain and the Association des Utilisateurs de transport de Fret (AUTF), actively pursue approaches towards low-carbon maritime transport. Together, they have created the Cargo Owners' Association for low-carbon maritime transport. This Association will bring together cargo owners with the aim to deploy innovative, low-carbon solutions at scale through collective tenders.
The first tender was launched at the beginning of February 2022 for two weekly transatlantic routes between Europe and North America operated from 2024 by container ships mainly propelled by the wind power. The ambition is to reduce CO2 emissions by at least half compared to conventional transport.
Groupe Avril, Bontaz, Coty, Gerflor, L'Occitane Group, Groupe Rocher, La Fournée Dorée, Massilly, Michelin, Moët Hennessy, Nestlé WaterS, Remy Cointreau have confirmed their willingness to transport part of their containers using this innovative means of transport, in order to reduce the environmental impact of their logistics.
The principles of scale and inclusivity are at the heart of this responsible transport initiative. Therefore, the Shippers’ Association is calling for other businesses to join the coalition and support the decarbonization of global maritime transport.
At a time when the world must reinvent itself facing major environmental challenges, the Supply Chain, the real nervous system of the economy, is essential in the drive for sustainable improvement.
